Here in North Carolina and throughout the southeast we have heap big troubles. Our water supply is nearing an end and there seems to be very little relief in sight. As with most, our water comes to us from reservoirs and Mother Nature and both are drying up. There has not been any significant amount of rain fall here in over a year and according to the long-term weather forecasts none is expected anytime soon. The local news channels and newspapers are headlining with a dire countdown of how many projected days are left until the water supply meter reads ‘empty’! In the recent past we have experienced water shortages and mandatory restrictions on usage but this go around seems to be bad…real bad. Just recently I read that Atlanta is predicting only an 85 day supply of tap water left and here at home we are somewhere near 180 days and counting. This does not paint a rosy picture when you take into account that the National Hurricane Center has reduced the number of projected named storms we should expect for the remainder of this hurricane season. When you add it all up along with what seems to be a changing weather pattern, our current landscape is in for what seems to be a very long and dry future. Back in 2001 during our last water crisis many of us resorted in putting bricks in our toilet tanks and chanted the bathroom mantra, “If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush in down”. Given our current situation these water saving tactics are already in place and I would not be surprised if we start seeing info-commercials on how to do the rain dance on PBS. Believe me folks, it is becoming that bad. I’m not sure what will come of all this moving forward but I do know one thing, we’re in trouble… Heap big trouble Kemo Sabe! {comment}
